Frequently Asked Questions

General Behaviour — Life at school

Mobile phones are allowed on school grounds, under the following conditions:

  • they may not be used in class (unless specific authorisation by the teacher), in the corridors and generally inside buildings
  • they are not covered by school insurance, and are considered personal property – the school cannot be held responsible if you lose your mobile phone inside its vicinity

Generally, they may only be used outside (in the yard) and in the specially-designed rooms (library – only for academic purposes, salle de détente, salle 6/7, …)

For security reasons pertaining to external threats, it is strictly forbidden to take pictures of the school buildings, its exterior and/or interior. Furthermore, for reasons of data protection, pictures of people can also not be taken within school grounds.

In general, please do not take pictures and/or video inside the school site.

Spending your break / free periods outside school is a right guaranteed to you via the school regulations. It is stipulated that unless this right has been taken away as part of a disciplinary action, you are allowed (according to your secondary year) to exit the school grounds.

When outside the school site, you are an unofficial representative of the school – this means that neighbours, pedestrians, drivers and shopkeepers are aware that you part of EEB3, and as such all actions you perform may be misinterpreted as being encouraged / allowed by the school. Taking this into account, and to keep the school’s image intact, you are asked to follow school rules, laws, and directives by school staff.

When outside, you are free to enjoy all rights awarded to you by the Belgian state, but are also governed by the responsibility to carry with you a piece of identification, in case you are controlled by local police services.

Tests & Exams

Depending on your year, different rules apply:

S4 – S6

(General Rules of the European Schools):

i. Where a pupil is absent from a written examination in years 4-6, the pupil’s legal representatives shall inform the Director of the reasons for his/her absence, immediately or the next day. In cases of illness, a medical certificate is mandatory to justify the absence. In all other cases, the Director will decide whether or not the absence is justified.

ii. A pupil who is absent (for a valid reason) from one or more first semester written examinations and has not had the opportunity to take a substitute examination, but who takes the second semester examinations in the same subjects, will have his/her final annual marks calculated on the basis of the results achieved in the second semester.

iii. A pupil who is absent (for a valid reason) from one or more second semester written examinations and has not had the opportunity to take a substitute examination shall be required to sit a promotion examination early in the new school year in the subjects he/she has missed, unless he/she achieved a mark of at least 7 in these subjects in the first semester and an A mark of at least 7 in the second semester.

iv. If a pupil is absent for a valid reason for the examinations in one or more subjects in the first and in the second semester, he/she shall be required to sit promotion examinations in the subjects which he/she has missed.

S7

(General Rules of the European Schools):

Without prejudice to the provisions of Article 8 of the Arrangements for implementing the Regulations for the European Baccalaureate:

i. Where a pupil is absent for a valid reason from one or more long part examinations organised by the school at the end of the first semester, he/she must sit replacement examinations conducted under the same conditions as the initial examinations, on dates decided by the Director.

ii. Where a pupil is absent for a valid reason from one or more short part examinations, he/she must sit tests conducted under the same conditions as the initial tests, on dates decided by the teachers concerned.

iii. Where a pupil is absent without grounds from one or more part examinations in year 7, he/she will not be allowed to take the Baccalaureate examinations.

  • The exam grades for years S4 to S6 are calculated on the basis of full (.00) and half (.50) marks. Those are recorded by the subject teachers on SMS, and are rounded using the standard rules for rounding:

(e.g. 0.1 < mark < 0.25 is rounded down to the nearest full mark, 0.26 < mark < 0.49 is rounded up to the nearest half mark, 0.51 < mark < 0.75 is rounded down to the nearest half mark, 0.76 < mark < 0.99 is rounded up to the nearest full mark)

  • The exam grades in year S7 are calculated using the formula specified on the Arrangements for implementing the Regulations for the European Baccalaureate, and are not rounded up/down. Instead, all reports included two decimal points (.99)

For the School year 2021/22, the following is in application:

  • In accordance with the characteristics required by the mathematics and physics syllabuses for secondary year s4 of the European Schools and by decision of the group of experts, which convened on 23 April 2020, for the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year in September 2020, year s4 students must have a non-graphing and non-programmable scientific calculator (the model used in s3, where applicable, may be sufficient).
  • In accordance with the characteristics required by the mathematics and physics syllabuses for secondary year s5 and s6 of the European Schools and by decision of the group of experts, which convened on 23 April 2020, for the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year in September 2020, year s5 & s6 students must have their own device allowing GeoGebra 6 software to be used in the classroom, at least in offline mode (see minimum characteristics of the device below). In addition, a non-graphing and non-programmable scientific calculator will be required for the 2020-2021 school year examinations (the model used in s4, where applicable, may be sufficient).
  • In accordance with the characteristics required by the mathematics syllabuses for secondary year s7 of the European Schools, for the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year in September 2021, year s7 students must have a TI-Nspire CX CAS calculator equipped with version 4.5.2.8 or higher of TI-Nspire software or a TI-Nspire CX II-T CAS calculator, equipped with version 5.1.3.73 or higher of TI-Nspire software.

The above is specified by the ES Memorandum in application, and concerns Mathematics & Physics equipment. For other subjects, please contact your subject teacher.

Attendance (Absences, lateness)

If your absence is not justified:

  • In the event of unauthorised absence for more than 15 consecutive days, the pupil shall be deemed to have left the school. The pupil’s legal representatives shall be so informed by registered letter.

  • Should repeated unauthorised absences of one or more periods continue to occur after the Director’s warning, the Discipline Council may decide on the pupil’s exclusion.

  • In the secondary cycle, should the number of periods during which a pupil is absent from a course be such that there is a risk that it will not be possible for an A mark to be awarded, the Director will warn the pupil’s legal representatives of the consequences outlined in paragraph e) for years 4-6 and in paragraph g) for year 7.

  • If, at the end of the first term or semester, the number of absences seems likely to exceed the threshold of 10% of the periods actually organised in one or more subjects, the Director will warn the pupil’s legal representatives of the risk of non-promotion or of being unable to take the Baccalaureate examinations.

If your absence is justified no sanction will be taken.

Your absence is justified only if you have a valid note from a legal representative or a medical justification.

If you are not in class and you provide no justification your absence will be considered as "unjustified".

Yes he can but he needs to send an email to your Educational Adviser with a valid justication.

For example for a medical appointment during 2-3 periods.

A teacher can decide to mark you late during one period. If you arrive more than 22.5 minutes late you can be marked as absent. Being late multiple times in the same class can affect your A mark if the teacher decides to.

If you are in S7 and you will take your bac being late multiple times can affect your bac and can prevent you from passing your bac. More infos here.

Sanctions & Disciplanary measures

Disciplinary measures in the secondary cycle shall be as follows:

(General Rules of the European Schools)

  • Reprimand.

  • Extra work.

  • Detention.

  • Warning and/or sanction by the Director.

  • Warning and/or sanction by the Director on a proposal from the Discipline Council.

  • Temporary exclusion from the school.

    • by the Director, for a maximum of three working days

    • by the Director, on a proposal from the Discipline Council, for a maximum of 15 working days.

  • Exclusion from one or more school trips organised during the current school year.

  • Expulsion from the school decided by the Director on a proposal from the Discipline Council.

A pupil’s expulsion shall not in principle entitle him/her to enrol at another European School.

The Discipline Council’s task shall be to examine serious infringements by pupils of school rules and general rules on communal life within the school.

The Discipline council is composed of the Director of the School (with voting rights), the Deputy Director of the cycle (without voting rights), and by members of the staff, with one teacher from each language section in the school, with a minimum of five teachers of different nationalities. The list of teachers making up the disciplinary council is considered confidential, and not revealed until the summons of a disciplinary council.

The Disciplinary Council reviews information related to the incident, deliberates and makes a proposal to the Director (by voting), of whether or not the pupil shall be disciplined, and in what way. Deliberations and voting are confidential, and announced to the pupil and his/her legal representatives after the closure of the council. The pupil summoned and his/her legal representatives are allowed to provide testimony to the Disciplinary council during its meeting, to mount a defence.

Except for the measures of (a) temporary exclusion from the School for more than three days, and (b) permanent expulsion (which can be imposed only after proposal from the Disciplinary council), the Director may decide to impose a sanction under his/her sole authority, should the Disciplinary council not make a proposal.

Grades & Reports

The final mark in a given subject shall reflect all the observations and results available to the teacher. It provides the basis to judge the progress and level of attainment of the pupil. It is not necessarily an arithmetical average of the semester marks (two A marks and two B marks) but it may not be lower than the lowest, or higher than the highest.
